Stuff!

Hey, lookie what I got:

Photo 74

Previous to now, I have not had any print materials.  I have gone to conferences and written my name and email on a napkin for someone that asked for my contact info.  I am SO pleased to have finally gotten my act together and had these cards made.  Trust me, I’m going to be handing them out to everyone – the barista at the coffee shop, the Barnes and Noble help desk guy, everyone.

I love that they are thematically in line with my website (scrolly-flower-bubble thingies!) and they are just in time, as we are just over two months out from the release of The Summer of You!  (Yes, I’m going to mention that EVERY time I blog.  Because it’s exciting.  And scary.  I should just cave and get a countdown clock installed on my website.)

And lookie what I got for that:

The frontThe back

Bookmarks!  They’re awfully pretty.  And on the back you’ll see a pic of Compromised and Revealed – the latter of which is getting its RE-release in mass market on March 2nd, 2010!  That’s ONE month away.  Egads!

Other than that, it’s a writing week.  So I’d better get to it!

Until later, happy reading!

Smugglering!

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Hi Everyone!  Quick Blog today, because I am over at the Book Smugglers being initiated into that fabulous rite of passage, Smugglivius, their year-in-review.  I compiled a list of all my favorite things from the year 2009, and there’s a new Summer of You excerpt, AND a giveaway!  It is my Smugglivius gift to you all, so head over and check it out!

In other non-denominational holiday stuff I am pleased to announce… I AM DONE.  Done with cards, done with shopping, wrapping, shipping, decorating, cookie making.  I have completed Christmas and still have ten days to go!  For once in my life, I came in on a deadline early.  I’m so proud of me.

I hope everyone is having a merry go of it… and if you need any last minute gift suggestions… I’ve always found a good romance novel to fit easily into a stocking.  :)

Happy Reading everyone!

Tom Jones

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I am the occasional practitioner of omniscient voice, or as I like to call it, the Tom Jones voice.  This name is not in reference to the knighted swinging singer of “Its Not Unusual”, but instead a reference to the 1749 novel by Henry Fielding.  You see, when Mr. Fielding needed to explain a small bit of backstory, he used omniscient voice, and simply… explained it, and generally with a very dry wit.  No need to filter it through a character’s point of view or shoehorn the info into dialogue.  I have used the Tom Jones voice in the same manner – whether it be to give the background of a fictional country or the heretofore unknown to the reader (but known to the characters) tidbit of information, such as the identity of a spy.

Omniscient voice is not that common in romance novels – and it’s easy to understand why.  When a story is as internal and personal as falling in love, you (the reader and writer both) don’t really want to interrupt the flow of emotion just to step back and view the larger picture, which is what omniscient voice does.   The downside is that the information has to come out somewhere, and sometimes it makes dialogue a little lumpy.  So for me it’s a bit of a gamble.  But, here’s the reason I prefer it:

Which sounds better to you…

While Mary and John were married, he was employed at the DoReMi Agency, which had any number shady dealings.  Difficulty arose when he decided to blow the whistle on his bosses, resulting in his firing, subsequent destitution, loss of wife, and loss of dog to his best friend Joe — who, deciding he could not possibly own a Chi-Chi, renamed the pup Larry.

Or…

Cindy reached over and took Joe’s hand.  “Do you mean to tell me,” she said, “that your friend Joe who used to work at the DoReMi Agency blew the whistle on his bosses’ criminal dealings and because of that lost his job, his money, and his wife?  And you got his dog?”

“Yep,” said Joe.  “And I renamed the dog Larry.”

What voice or person do you prefer to read and/or write in?  First?  Third from character POV?  Third omniscent?

Around the Interwebs

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Amidst the faaaaaaaabulous things I have been writing this week (heh… right.), I, on occasion (read: every 15 minutes) peruse the internet, for inspiration, information, and just plan fun.  Among the things I’ve learned this week:

I landed on Katiebab’s list of favorite debut authors of 2009!  Very pleased to be in such illustrious company of Leanna Renee Hieber and the awesome Tessa Dare.  “But,” you might say, in your British and proper way, darn you – “you’re not a debut author of 2009.  Compromised was originally released in 2008.”  And I say curse you and your logic!  Yes, technically, I’m not a 2009 debut author, but Compromised was rereleased in 2009.  Besides, I’m going on the assumption that I was not read by Katiebabs until 2009, so at the very least, I’m a debut author to her.  So…. Ppppplllllffffftttttt!

The people over at MyLifeIsAverage have a far less average life than me.  And yet, their version of average sounds really fun!  I never had a sword fight with my mom in Target.  Perhaps I should challenge her next time we go.

Nowhere in the New York Magazine’s Sex Diaries could I find an entry by a romance novelist. There’s likely a reason for this.  Disappointed, but the reading itself totally counts as research.

And finally:

Matthew Morrison is going to record an album!  Mr. Schuster on Glee!  The cutie pie has curly hair too! (I feel a kinship.  I can’t help it.  We of the curled persuasion have to stick together.)

And that’s all for this week.  But there will be TERRIBLY interesting things happening on the interwebs on Tuesday Nov. 10th, when I guest blog at RomCon.  Stop on by!

Until then, happy reading!

Interview!

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Hi All!
Just wanted to say there is an interview of me up over at the Book Smugglers Blog, along with a lovely new review of Compromised. http://thebooksmugglers.com/. There’s a contest too – so come on by and check it out!

Contest Closed and Road Tripping!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Hi everyone – I want to thank everyone for entering my first ever contest. From Savich and Sherlock to Shaggy and Scooby Doo you guys plumbed the depths of your favorite investigative partnerships. All five winners have been notified via email – but I want to give a special shout out to April, for her deep and devoted love to the movie K-9, which was truly the most passionate and inspired entry I received. If you entered, check your email, and congratulations to all the winners!

In other news, I spent this weekend on the road. I love a good road trip – I don’t drive all that often — living in New York City, I mostly take the bus or subway to get to where I need to go. When I visit my family, planes and trains are the mode of transport, rarely automobiles. So when I get into the car, and drive all day, it’s an experience I relish.
On a road trip, I’m allowed fast food. Don’t tell me you can drive past 400 Arbys and not stop at one for a jamocha shake. And I always have an inlaid stock of twizzlers, diet coke, and cookies with some form of chip in them. Fritos, too. Love fritos. Never eat them at home. Calories consumed during a road trip don’t count.
I also allow myself book tapes. I’m a little of a book purist (It must be read to be understood!) but that’s really just an act because I can’t listen to book tapes on my ipod. I’m afraid I’ll be sitting on the subway and burst out laughing at something in the story and people will call the transpo police on the crazy blonde, laughing to herself in the third car. So this weekend, it was me, the open road, twizzlers and David Handler. I had a wonderful time. What about you guys? Do you have any road trip rules?

Happy Reading, everyone!

P.S. Occasionally I stopped the book and listened to a little radio. Who is the Florida person and why did he cover Right Round by Dead or Alive? Did he think he could top the fabulous video they did in the 80s with the flags from color guard? There is no topping the flags from color guard!

Contest!

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

First of all I have to say, there is an awesome review of Revealed up over at The Book Smugglers blog. If you haven’t read it, check it out: http://thebooksmugglers.com/2009/03/book-review-revealed-by-kate-noble.html

Now, I have to make a confession: I’m a contest virgin. I have never had one in the past, and I rarely enter them. The one time I did, I won a coffee table. And honestly, what can top that? (Besides coffee table books, I mean. Word play!)
So it is with an intrepid heart and crossed fingers (hard to type with crossed fingers, by the way) that I present to you, my first ever Contest!

So here are the rules:

The hero and heroine in Revealed, Marcus and Phillippa, become partners in an investigation. Uneasy partners at first, but then they start to get along very well. So all you have to do is tell me who your favorite fictional investigative partners are and why.

They can be male-female (like Goren and Eames), male-male (Holmes and Watson), female-female (Cagney and Lacey), human-animal (Turner and Hooch), animal-animal (Pinky and the Brain pretending to be Watson-Holmes) or heck, just about any combination investigational partnership you can think of, from books, movies, tv, comics, etc.

How to contact me:
Just email me at kate@katenoble.com (put “April Contest” in the header) or send me a message via my contact form on my website, www.katenoble.com/contact.html

Time Span:
Over the next week (March 30th to April 5th)

Prize:
My top five favorite entries will receive their choice of a signed copy of Revealed or a signed copy of Compromised. Winners will be announced on Monday April 6th!

Good luck everyone, and happy reading!

It’s here!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Compromised is out today in Mass Market! This means if you missed it when it came out in the larger trade size last year, you can now get it cheaper! Which, lets face it, in this economy, is important. Hope everyone is having a good week — and we are one month to the DAY of Revealed’s release!

February!

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Wow – January went amazingly fast, didn’t it? I swear, my brain refuses to acknowledge its not 2008 anymore, let alone February. But, February is pretty awesome, because…

Its here! On Feb 3rd, Compromised is getting its second release, this time in mass market. (which is the smaller, totally able to throw in your bag and read on the subway/bus/treadmill size!)

This of course, begins the countdown for the March 3rd release of Revealed! I can’t wait to see it in the stores – it’s a bit surreal, to think this time last year I had just finished spilling the story from my brain onto paper, and now, it will shortly be covered and printed and have a barcode and everything. I know I’m still relatively new to this (Revealed being my second book) but I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it.

In other news, I just filled out my application for the 2009 RWA Conference, in Washington DC. I was so excited to go to San Francisco last year, but being an East Coast girl, I have to admit its nice to just hop on the train. Plus, I haven’t done DC since I was in middle school. I am looking forward to the chance to see Dorothy’s shoes and the Hope diamond almost as much as I’m looking forward to the conference.

Bourbon Balls and Gym Mixes

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

In my life, especially around the holidays, one inevitably leads to the other. Bourbon Balls are holiday cookies, except they’re not really cookie-like, they are balls of chocolate held together by sugar and bourbon. So is it any wonder I have spent an inordinate amount of time today arranging a playlist for the gym? I have a surprising number of White Stripes songs… maybe I should throw in some Led Zeppelin, just for good measure.
I adore the holidays, the presents and family and totally allowable excess of sugary treats, but I’m very glad they are almost over. Why? Because it means we are that much closer to the release dates for Compromised’s second run and Revealed’s first. It also means that I am making headway on the next, which will be a 2010 release. And 2010 is now a mere year away….
