Con-Con Can-Can

Monday, July 26th, 2010

This week, just about everyone in the romance writing industry is going to be heading to sweltering Orlando for the Romance Writers of America National Conference, and I for one, am so excited.  How excited you may ask?  Excited enough that I have been packed for a week now – and I won’t even be there until Friday!

I’m only going for a truncated visit, so sadly I’ll miss the Literacy Signing on Wednesday evening, but if you happen to be in the Orlando area, I encourage you to stop by – its open to the public, over 500 authors will be signing their books and I guarantee you the space will be air conditioned.  The thought alone of Orlando in July makes my hair curl.

But I will be there for the Berkley House signing for conference attendees on Friday and the RITA awards on Saturday evening.  Since Revealed is a nominee, there is no way I’m missing my one chance to give an Oscar speech, if I win.  Maybe even if I don’t win.  I’ve hired Kanye West to come steal the mike from Tessa Dare when her name is inevitably called.  (By the by, I just finished Seduction of a Siren.  DUDE.  So Good!  Which is so aggravating for me!)

I prepped for this year’s Romance convention, by spending this past weekend at another convention: the San Diego Comic Con.  I have long wanted to go, and witness the madness.  But since previous to this year I lived 3000 miles away, it seemed impractical.  Being only 150 miles away now, I had no such excuse.

It was INSANE.  I have never seen anything quite as colorful, and loud and yet polite (except for the guy who got stabbed, but there is not violence like nerd violence) as comic fans.  My favorite booth was naturally, the BBC America, aka the Doctor Who booth.  I got T-shirts.  I curse myself for not getting a desktop dalek, but since I already had a TARDIS piggy bank, I thought the dalek might have been overkill.

dwshirts

(these are my Doctor Who shirts.  Jealous?)

But the best thing about Comic Con is that everyone there loves comics.  And that got me in the spirit for RWA, and now, as I sit at my desk and write, I can only think on the awesomeness of the coming weekend, the friends I will meet and those I have yet to, and the easy joy of being around a sorority of women who simply love romance.

If you happen to be there, please come find me and say hello!  If not, until next week – happy reading!

Space Mountain

Monday, July 12th, 2010

In about three weeks, a couple hundred romance authors and a couple thousand romance fans are going to descend upon Orlando, Florida for the annual RWA National Conference.  And I.  Am.  Psyched.  I’m talking, like, better-than-Predators psyched.  Better-than-a-line-by-line-reenactment-of-Ghostbusters psyched.  I get to see a bunch of friends I only see online otherwise, and hopefully make some new ones.  I get to interact with fans, with industry professionals, and I’m frickin’ nominated for a RITA, people! There’s no way I’m missing this.

But one of the best things about this year is the fact that we will be having the conference at the Walt Disney Resort…which means I get to face down my old nemesis, Space Mountain.

The story goes like this:  when I was nine, my family took a candy-and-nostalgia fueled trip to Disney World.  We rode the rides, Mr. Toad, the Haunted Mansion, etc.  Went up the big ball o’ Epcot, and even saw the Michael Jackson show, Captain EO. But the one ride I refused to go on was Space Mountain.  It was a roller coaster.  In the dark.  I don’t think my logic was unsound.  But being as my mother was understanding and had two other kids to deal with, she let me sit Space Mountain out.  But being as my father didn’t want me to A. be afraid of a rollercoaster, and B. miss out on the experience, woke up extremely early on the last day we were there, and took me to ride Space Mountain, before anyone else was in the park.

We rode it three times.

And now, I have to opportunity to face down my old friend and nemesis, and conquer Space Mountain once again!

If I get to leave the conference hotel, that is.

I encourage everyone in the Orlando area on July 28th to attend the Literacy Signing at RWA.  Its open to the public and all proceeds benefit ProLiteracy Worldwide.  There will be 500 of your favorite authors there, autographing their works.  Unfortunately, I will not be one of them, as I won’t be getting to the conference until the 30th.   But go!  Have fun!  And if you’re attending the conference, see you on the 30th!

Lots of work this week, but hopefully some summer fun.  Until next time, Happy Reading, everyone!

Marga-frickin-RITAs!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I had a very cute, very demure post all planned out for this week before The Summer of You hits the shelves.  It was, I kid you not, about the weather.  But all of that went out the window, when on Thursday morning, I was awakened by a phone call telling me that Revealed was a RITA® Finalist in the Regency Historical Romance category!  The Romance Writers of America’s RITA awards are the highest honor in romance writing, so the squeal I let out was wholly justified – really, neighbors, it was.  I knew the announcements were coming sometime at the end of March, but I wasn’t really paying attention (read: I didn’t think I had a shot in hell) so getting the wake-up call was a complete surprise.  I still don’t think I have a chance in hell – I think either Tessa Dare or the estimable Julia Quinn are going to beat the living crap out of me, (Literally.  In the alley behind the hotel in Nashville) but it truly is such an honor to be a finalist.

And this happy news is on top of all the excitement for the countdown to the release of The Summer of You! I am getting on a plane this week for the reading at Lady Jane’s Salon, which will be on April 5th, followed by a bunch of blog appearances at only the very best places.  (Details can be found on the Recent News section of my website.)

I feel like I’ve been talking about The Summer of You for so long, and preparing for its release that to have the day within my sights is… weird.  I’m desperate to have Jane and Byrne out in the world, but some small part of me wants to keep them to myself.  But the day, April 6th, is coming, and there is no turning back the tide.  Besides, you can’t fully appreciate the 99% of happy without that 1% of sad.

Very, very busy week this week – hopefully I can hit my word counts!

The Left Coast

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

I’m having some difficulty getting my blog page to post pictures, so unfortunately I won’t be able to display my awesome new cover of The Summer of You! But suffice to say, I’m working on it, and if you would like to see it, hop on over to my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/katenoblewriter. (and while you’re there, friend me!)

And we have a released date, too: April 6th, 2010. So mark your calendars, everyone! (Mom, you too.)

Left Coast Living is… different from the East. First of all, I have to drive everywhere. I used to read on the subways all the time, so now I’ve lost about an hour of reading time a day. Conversely, it’s gorgeous here. ALL THE TIME. Why would I want to be reading on a subway when I could be out crossing a beautiful canyon? But this is a problem, because I got a bunch of books at the RWA conference this year, and these are the books I would normally read on the subway. I’ve got everything from Deanna Raybourn to Amanda Quick.

So here’s my question for you: where should I start?

RWA! Now with extra-patriotism!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Hi all — Its been a hectic couple of weeks: turned in my last project, and then shortly thereafter learned that I am going to be moving. Across country. In less than a month.

Oy.

I’ve been packing. Lots of packing. I had eleven boxes that were just books. I don’t know if I should think that is an extreme amount or a severe dearth, but if it’s the latter, I’ll be making up for it because……………

I’m at RWA in Washington DC!

Land of Books in the Land of the Free!

It kicked off today with the massive Literacy book signing, where I sat and met with wonderful people who stopped by, including Mandi from http://smexybooks.blogspot.com and Katiebabs from her blog at http://kbgbabbles.blogspot.com

It was wonderful meeting everyone at the signing, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow… when the fun (and conference) really begins.

Until then, happy reading!

Due Day!

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Happy July everyone! I’ve been out of circulation for a little while, and the reason is summed up in one little compound word: deadline. I turned in, not 24 hours ago, my latest project! And while I look forward to getting feedback and notes from my trusted editor and agent, I also am DYING to go to the movies, and oh, I don’t know, read a book? My brain would benefit from a little time off.

But it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of time to benefit my brain, because in two short little weeks, is the RWA National conference in D.C.! I’m going to be at the Literacy Signing on Wednesday, July 15th, so if you’re there, stop on by, I would *love* to see you. But for right now, I think I might go by a huuuuuge tub of popcorn and hang out in a movie theater for a day or two.

Happy reading, everybody!

February!

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Wow – January went amazingly fast, didn’t it? I swear, my brain refuses to acknowledge its not 2008 anymore, let alone February. But, February is pretty awesome, because…

Its here! On Feb 3rd, Compromised is getting its second release, this time in mass market. (which is the smaller, totally able to throw in your bag and read on the subway/bus/treadmill size!)

This of course, begins the countdown for the March 3rd release of Revealed! I can’t wait to see it in the stores – it’s a bit surreal, to think this time last year I had just finished spilling the story from my brain onto paper, and now, it will shortly be covered and printed and have a barcode and everything. I know I’m still relatively new to this (Revealed being my second book) but I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it.

In other news, I just filled out my application for the 2009 RWA Conference, in Washington DC. I was so excited to go to San Francisco last year, but being an East Coast girl, I have to admit its nice to just hop on the train. Plus, I haven’t done DC since I was in middle school. I am looking forward to the chance to see Dorothy’s shoes and the Hope diamond almost as much as I’m looking forward to the conference.

Summertime, and the livin’ is busy…

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I missed blogging last week, and I am going to duck responsibility and totally blame my crazy schedule. My day job kicked into overdrive just as my proposal for book 3 was due, as well as preparing for San Francisco in two weeks! Yes, I’m going to the Romance Writer’s of America National Conference this year, and I can’t wait! I’ll be at the literacy book signing, so if you’re going to be there stop on by and say hello! I’m also looking forward to having a drink with my agent and my editor, sitting in on a couple of really cool workshops, hearing the speakers, and losing my capacity for speech in front of my favorite authors. I’m bringing an extra suitcase just for the books I intend to get. Hope to see some of you there!

(side note: Saw the Dark Knight yesterday. Totally Awesome.)

The day to day

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

I have to say, these past few weeks of sending Compromised out into the world have been great. But imagine my surprise when I discovered I still have to go about my life. Shocking, I know! I assumed that as a Published Author, I wouldn’t have to do the mundane things like… grocery shop. Or laundry. I mean, don’t Published Authors have people to do that for them? I shouldn’t have to go for the gym, someone should go in my place whilst I recline gracefully on my chaise and reap the benefits… no? That isn’t how it works? Sigh. Oh well.

On of the many day to day things that I have being doing is pondering the next book. Book 2 is already with my fabulous editor, so now is the time to be germinating, ruminating, perhaps even ratiocinating on Book 3. And I have some characters laid out that I like. And I think I have a story – it might need to develop a little more, but thicker plot generally (for me) comes out of the writing process. But in any case, its time to get a move on. Tomorrow is spring.

In other news, I signed up to go to the RWA National conference in San Francisco this summer! I’ve never been to a national conference before, so I’m very excited and deeply nervous. If anyone has been and can offer advice, my ears are open…

Happy writing –
